Addiction
I haven't played a computer game since I discovered tumours in my liver. Computer games have taken up a terrible amount of my spare time since Dad returned from Hong Kong in 1984 with an Atari 2600. Civilization impacted on my honours degree and was one of the costs of losing the first love of my life.

All that is behind me now.

And yet, Fallout 3 is about to be released in Australia very soon... the torrents are already up.

From what I remember about Fallout 2, that was one very deep and impressive game.

They were fantastic RPGs. Very adult, very scf-fi (and lovingly so) and very violent. Great character development and multiple solutions to most (if not every) problem. I just loved it.

you may find that the tone of your relationship with computer games has changed.

i've noticed over the last few years that i just don't have the same obsessive addiction to games that i used to. civ2 took over my life for weeks and weeks during my honours year, but i loaded civ4 a while back and was delighted to find that i could enjoy a few games without losing many many hours and getting sucked in to staying up all night. it's still on my computer but i haven't launched it for months.

what it is, i think, is that games promise more than they deliver. despite their seductive lure, there's always an element of dissatisfaction in any game, even something as sophisticated as civ4. lately i'm finding that there's a point in the game where the element of dissatisfaction outweighs the pleasure it delivers, and i just naturally stop.

frankly i'd rather waste time by playing piano.

fallout 3 sounds cool.

you're lucky you didn't get that 'hook' with Civ4 - I certainly did. I wasted many hours, and luckily many chemo hours which were wasted anyway though I couldn't play games when the chemo was too bad ie about half of it, because my body would overload when I concentrated and I'd sweat, heartbeat would race, nausea would increase. crazy stuff.

Oh MAN, Civilization 4 (specifically Civ 4: Beyond the Sword) is the writer's antichrist. There aren't many games that can steal 6 hour blocks of time unnoticed, but that is one of them. I was so annoyed at my lack of productivity that I uninstalled all games off my computer and gave the discs to a mate for safekeeping...

...having said that, I did recently download and play Post-Apocalyptic Unicorn Uprising...but it was a moment of weakness :-)

I've made a rule that there's no more games till I finish a novel or win WOTF, but Fallout 3 nearly broke my willpower.
